For what reason would someone hand pollinate a lily? What happens when this is done?

On a store bought Lily in a vase, for example.

Hand pollination is often done to produce a cross between two lilies. This produces a hybrid.
Reply:People hand pollinate plants for several reasons 1.) they want to make sure that a plant produces seeds with the characteristics of a specific plant. 2.) The insect that normally pollinates that plant doesn%26#039;t exist in their area. 3.) they want to produce a hybrid (see reason 1). In the case of the lily I suspect the person liked that plant %26amp; wanted to produce seeds that might reproduce the parent plant.
