Can a Beta fish die from getting caught in peace lily roots?

I got a Beta in a large vase. 2 days later I added a peace lily. He really took to it and was always up in the roots but usually squirmed away. A few days later I found him dead in the roots. Could I have overfed him in 5 days or was it too cold in the house (around 65 degrees)?

Yes to both your questions. 65 is too cold for bettas, they require a warm tank.





And yes you could have overfed him. How often did you change the water in his bowl/tank?





If you have an unfiltered bowl then you need to change the water daily with tap water that is heated to the same temp as the bowl and treated with a decholorinator.





PLEASE IGNORE THE COMMENT THAT BETTAS DON%26#039;T BREATH UNDERWATER. THAT IS SIMPLY FALSE. Bettas are anabantoids and have gills like all other fish. However in addition they have the ability to take in air via the mouth and extract oxygen from it.

Reply:well plants are good for betas, however sometimes ppl overfeed them. Up to 2 pieces of food per day (two dots), and that is it.
Reply:Most people here are wrong betta have non functional gills. Both betta and many gourami can drown. Studies have been done where the labyrinth organ was removed, and the betta died in oxygenated water. That said I%26#039;d go with temp followed by over feeding before drowning. Betta love to rest on and in plants. The only way I can imagine a plant drowning a betta is if the plant covered the surface of the water. He should have been able to get himself out. Below 65 is often lethal to betta. Their comfort range is 75-85F.
Reply:Bettas need water that is 80 degrees and, while they can breath underwater, they also need to be able to reach oxygen at the top, which a peace lilly takes away from. Whoever invented it, that peace lilly and betta thing was a really, really bad idea.... feed Bettas - feed all fish - according to directions.
Reply:the best answer here so far is the first one. he is complete right that the betta could die from being tangled, and that the breathe air fromth e surface but CAN breathe air from the water with gills too. however, your betta could have died from suffocation because he couldn%26#039;t get to the top if there wasn%26#039;t enough air in the water. bettas don%26#039;t need pumps in their water if they have access to the surface, however, if not they do need pumps like any other fish, they can%26#039;t get air from the water if there is none. so if he could get to the top but got tangled he very well could have suffocated.





also, bettas should not be kept in anything that is not a filtered and heated tank. just like any other fish they produce waste and need it to be filtered out. they definitely shouldn%26#039;t be kept in anything under 1 gallon filter and heater or not.





bettas can SURVIVE in bowls or vases but it is just that, surviving. they don%26#039;t have a very healthy or happy life and easily get diseases and die. the average temp of water when kept at room temp is about 65F. that%26#039;s almost 20 degrees colder than they should have. so put yourself in your bettas shoes for a moment, what most people keep them in would be the equivalent of staying in closet kept at 45F with no toilet so you have to just go to the bathroom on the floor and twice a day someone gives you the same type of food every day from under the door (or once a day 3 times a week if your care taker listens to walmart... walmart should NOT give fish advice). if you have good care taker someone comes in once a week and cleans out your waste from the floor. not a happy life, right?





so be kind you your betta. a happy betta live in a 5gallon tank with a filter and heater kept at 78F. the tank should have lots of live AQUARIUM plants (not things for vases) and things to explore. mix up his diet with occasional treats of freeze dried blood worms. you can even get him a tank mate like a mystery snail or a fan shrimp if you have a filter and heater and a tank of at least 5 gallons.

while I%26#039;ve never read about these tests and I don%26#039;t doubt the person bellow, me I had a female betta that had severe swim bladder disorder and was upside down for weeks, I put a pump in her water and she was fine. I%26#039;m not a scientist, I go by what I find through research and experience, so I can%26#039;t say who%26#039;s right and who%26#039;s wrong, I just know they CAN drown and that my female did live in well aerated water for a long period of time.
