lilies are my favorite flower, so i want to make a little garden for lilies. i have a good sized area, it currently holds about 18 dead rose bushes that my house came with. i already have mixed oriental lilies, but i was wondering which to plant with it. i have a budget, so i want to start with only about three types and then add to it each year.i have to plant them this week or it will be too late.
what do you reccomend i plant? i live in texas, so if anybody is familiar with what types will grow best, id be grateful.
thanks, rachel
Planting a lily garden?
Companion plants: Low spreading plants are good and some of the taller varieties of ground cover are tall enough to hide the tall legs. They also keep moisture and coolness around the roots of the lilies which are immensely beneficial...... Other lily varieties would be Skygazers, Daylilies, The "Enchantment" "Corina" lily is pretty....you might even want to plant along some dwarf varieties of the lily like the beautiful red "Little Business" daylily to give some interest at different heights. Mixed foxglove would look good too..... Search Michigan Bulb Company, Park Seed, or Gurney's they've got excellent deals on bulbs right now. You can shop online or get a free catalog mailed to you. I actually have the catalogs in front of me right now. Time to order some for myself. Lilies, especially the dayliles do so well here in the deep south.
Reply:Daylillies. There are hundreds of varieties and they will grow
in the sun or in the shade. They are not the least bit fussy.
Go to a nursery or maybe a day lilly farm. They get bigger every year so eventually you can divide them.
Reply:You must absolutely have some daylilies.
Reply:Hi, Rachel,
Your local garden centre can make the best suggestions on what will grow well in your area. I live considerably further north and availability is different here in zone 4/5. We're still facing many feet of snow on the ground.
Good Growing!!!
