Is lily a type of flower for the dead? what about Casablanca Lily?

when i told my friends that i love lilies, there were like "wooh, that's for the dead people!" [in the Buddhist culture?] but i LOVE Casablanca lilies. can anyone clarify this for me?

Is lily a type of flower for the dead? what about Casablanca Lily?
Lilies are actually pretty popular in weddings too! They're not for death alone, at least not in American cultures. People send roses and the like to funerals too, but that doesn't make them flowers only for the dead.

Edited to add: There ARE Casablaca Lilies, as well as calla lillies.... http://www.flowerbud.com/casablanca-lili...
Reply:DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ASK. IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY THE EASTER LILY MEANS LIFE AND THAT IS WHY YOU SEE SO MANY RIGHT NOW. LOVE THEM! I DO.
Reply:i have heard that too. my mom got mad at my dad for buying her thoses! (wierd!)
Reply:You mean calla-lilies. Yeah, I think the stigma is silly. I have hundreds of calla-lilies growing in my back yard. They are beautiful but frankly, they grow like out of control weeds.
Reply:Actually, the Casablanca Lily has a meaning (like roses). It's love at first sight :)
Reply:I dont know about the Buddhist culture...but in some countries it is a tradition to place white lilies when visiting graves....

only white, not colorful lilies, those are a great gift for celebrations.

but there is no reason for you to change your flower choice simply because of what it represents...i love casablanca and stargazer lilies, and i have a tendency to buy white lilies just because i find them to be beautiful...to me white is the purest of all colors and i dont care what other people think.
Reply:Your friends are strange. My parents own a florist and lilies are used in weddings more than they are in funerals.
Reply:Sounds like your friends should lighten up! It's not as if your buying a big wreath of flowers with your picture in the middle!
Reply:Agreed, calla lilies used to be associated with death/funerals, but to me the flower o' death is and will always be the gladiolus. Ugh.

Stargazer lilies are my favorites - what a gorgeous scent! And Casablanca lilies are just spectacular looking.
Reply:My bestfriend had all of us bridesmaids hold calla lilies at her wedding. If you like lilies don't be bothered by what other people say.
Reply:aren't lillies kin to orchids and if so the orchids/lillies are used in celebration of life and youth(i.e. orchids for proms and orchids /lillies for vases of summer entertaining, etc,)
