Don't you think Snape wouldn't care for Harry if not for Lily?

When you think about it, Snape only really cared for Harry because he loved Lily. When he found out that she was in danger, he went to Dumbledore. If Lily wasn't Harry's mother, he wouldn't care about Harry at all and would still be a Death Eater. Anyone agree?

Don't you think Snape wouldn't care for Harry if not for Lily?
No I don't think Snape turned out to be good. He didn't give a darn about that kid. He was just avenging Lily. It was fairly obvious he had no use for Harry because Harry was too much like his father. Pax-C
Reply:Snape was good. He felt remorse and done everything he could to help Harry.

Because he had just as much reason to hate Harry as he did to like him.

He could of been pissed that Lily choose James over him, and he was...but he repented over it. If he hadn't of then he would of been bad.

And it was a choice.
Reply:Oh, I don't know about Snape not being TRULY good. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to risk the wrath of Voldemort for the sake of unrequited love, to endanger your life in the interests of a boy who reminds you so much of a man you disliked (with good reason) just because of his mother. Snape didn't benefit from those acts; he did them for Lily, a dead Lily, a Lily who didn't love him. I think it takes a good person to do that.

I think Harry named one of his sons for Snape because he realized that, not just because Snape loved his mother. Snape was brave, and he was brave at tremendous risk to himself. Does that count as true goodness? I'm not sure, but it's a goodness of some kind.
Reply:It wasn't his fault he was turned out to be evil look at his troubled childhood and his years at Hogwarts weren't that great because James got Lily. It's true he only really cared for Harry because of Lily but you can't blame him because Harry looked like James.
Reply:if it hadnt been for lily i dont think snape would have protected harry....... he was a good guy but he did it all for lily....
Reply:yes. JK Rowling even confirmed it.

In an interview someone asked her if snape was a hero now.

JKR said that he wasen't. Snape only wanted to help Harry because he was Liliy's son. If it had been any other kid he wouldn't have cared. Snape's love for liliy has shown something though. That there is hope for him. He unlike old Voldy is able to love.
Reply:i think its been established that he's not good, only wanting to have a sort of legacy for lily.
Reply:Severus never cared for Harry. Ever. That was well established in the scene between him and Dumbledore, when D asks if he's come to care for the boy after all.

There's no such thing as good and evil. Everyone has some good and some bad in them; it's just the amounts of them that makes the difference. Voldemort clearly has very little good (the only human thing about him is caring for Hogwarts, the place he once called home) and a lot of bad, but other than that, most people are fairly balanced.

Yes, Severus became a Death Eater and killed/failed to save people, but you must think of the reasons behind those actions. He grew up with an abusive father who hated him and his mother for being magical. That's a decent reason to grow up prejudiced against muggles. And yes, I know Harry grew up much the same way and ended up very differently, but even Dumbledore admits that that is highly unusual and is part of what makes Harry special. Severus was almost all alone most of his life, and here was a chance to make something of himself (or so he thought).

Remember what Dumbledore tells Harry after Sirius dies? "This shows that you are still a man. This pain is part of being human." The fact that we can love others is what makes us human. Think of the look on Snape's face after Lily is killed. He wishes he were dead. He doesn't want to go on. As someone already pointed out, he risked his life again and again for the son of a woman who chose to marry his childhood enemy instead of him.

Was it fair of him to judge Harry based on his father's actions? Of course not. But it was understandable, and that's the point of the whole series. It is our choices that show what we truly are. Snape chose to protect the son of the woman he loved, even though he hated the boy.

Is Snape perfect? Absolutely not. But he's not evil, either. He's simply human.
Reply:well you are right in a way.i supose your right all the way but snape was stuck.he hated harry because he was so much like james but liked him because it was the women he loveds son.It botherd snape so much that harry was james' son .i think he wishes harry was his son and didn't turn out so much like james.and i think what scared him the most about harry is that he told voldemort to kill james and harry but not lilly ,but yet harry is alive.and your right if james wasn't there he wouldn't be a death eater.he was so haunted by james' taunts and the fact that he dated and married the girl he loved since he was a child.the whole sistuation is based around snpes hatered for james and the fact that james was even born.but if he wasn't we wouldn't have a book would we?
Reply:Here's how I understand it. Please keep in mind that it's my personal opinion, and I haven't made a point to study the series or try to read anything big into it. Here goes:

Snape loved Lily, who ended up falling for(?) and marrying James Potter. Snape didn't like James due to the fact that James and friends were constantly picking on "Snivelus." Snape became bitter over the fact that the girl he'd had a crush on since childhood had married his biggest tormenter. When Harry showed up at Hogwarts Snape probably felt slightly compelled to help Harry as Lily's son, but those feelings were drowned out by his bitterness towards Harry as James Potter's kid. In the end, though, it came out that Snape had been looking out for Harry, as Lily's son, from the start, but couldn't show it because of his reputation as an ex-Death Eater and the danger from Voldemort's other supporters.
Reply:Idk because he was in love with Lily and he dispised James for all the times he teased him and everything and i dnt think he would have liked Harry very much if not for Lily because then snape wouldnt have done all the nice things for Harry and try to keep him alive all this time until the Deathly Hollows then Voldemort kills Snape.....So not i dnt think that proffesor Snape would have ever been nice to Harry if not for Lily!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:I don't think he would, but he wouldn't like want him dead or anything. I don't think he really cared for Harry even though he loved Lily.
Reply:there is no way to know
Reply:true, true
