Why didn't Lupin or Sirius tell Harry about Severus and Lily's close friendship?

i know its all up to JK Rowling what she puts in the book...but why wasn%26#039;t there a hint before the 7th book that Severus and Lily were friends? Since Lupin and Sirius went to school with both Severus and Lily surely they would of seen them togeather? hmm....

Why didn%26#039;t Lupin or Sirius tell Harry about Severus and Lily%26#039;s close friendship?
They probably didn%26#039;t know. They made a point of not associating with Snape, who obviously wouldn%26#039;t have told them anyway, and Lily wasn%26#039;t too fond of them either. By the time she got to know them, she and Snape had already had their falling-out.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think they really knew. I believe it was more of a secret friendship. I mean, Severus probably didn%26#039;t tell his fellow Slytherins he loved a Gryffindor. And besides, Sirius and Remus were probably too caught up in their own lives to notice. Well, maybe not Remus, but he probably wouldn%26#039;t have told James because it would probably have really upset him.
Reply:Animosity between Slytherin and Griffindor houses. They weren%26#039;t really close to Lily until she started going out with James... which wasn%26#039;t until after the incident in their 5th year when Snape called Lily a %26quot;Mudblood%26quot;. And Lupin did say that Lily was kind, seeing goodness in people who couldn%26#039;t see it in themselves. This could easily be a reference to not only her treatment of him, a warewolf, but of Snape as well.
Reply:they may never have known the real deep relationship there.

think about people you went to school with. just b/c you saw two people talking doesn%26#039;t mean that you instantly know the depths of their relationship.

i think JK revealed this well, to us. it also helps explain snape%26#039;s protection of HP and if she had hinted to it earlier, then we may have not taken him seriously as a villain....

we needed to get set up to hate him, just like harry, so we could be tugged back into realizing that things aren%26#039;t always as they seem.

lupin and sirius were great characters, but they weren%26#039;t always thinking with their hearts....at least not when it came to snape. so, they probably just shoved any thoughts of lily and snape out of their minds....covered it up with dislike.

besdies,

when would it have been pertinent to mention it???
Reply:thats a really really really good question.

now i have to think about that one...
Reply:they probably didn%26#039;t know about the friendship! i mean Lily was a Gryffindor and Snape was a Slytherin. The Lions and the Snakes aren%26#039;t usually best friends.
Reply:well in the OOTP, when harry tells his aunt and uncle about the dementors, petunia surprises everyone by saying %26quot;they guard the wizard prison%26quot; when asked how she knew that she answrs %26quot;i heard that awful boy telling her about them ages ago%26quot; what you assume at the time is %26quot;that awful boy%26quot; is james but it%26#039;s really severus snape! other then that, maybe james and sirius didn%26#039;t really know about their relationship since they were in different houses and probably had different schedules that they didn%26#039;t have a lot of time to hang out.
Reply:I dont think that they knew about it! I mean when Lily and Snape were talking ouside the Gryfindor common room it was probably really late!
Reply:err.. good point. maybe lupin or sirius didnt know themselves cuz lily and snape were hushed up about it.
Reply:There%26#039;s two reasons:

Lupin was, at the time, a teenager with his own problems (being a werewolf) and his own friends (the Marauders). Am the littl ewe see of Sirius in Snape%26#039;s memory makes me think he was not very attentive to things going on outside his circle. I%26#039;m sure they only paid attention to Lily in passing and probably only after she started going out with James. Lily had already stopped being friends with Snape by that point.

Lupin as an adult would have been focused on teaching Harry (in PoA), and it would have been inappropriate for him to chat to Harry about what he knew about Harry%26#039;s mother and father. In OoTP (and HBP) I think that Lupin and Sirius probably thought that there were more important things to talk about, like defeating Voldemort. I%26#039;m sure they would not have known that Snape%26#039;s relationship with Lily was of any importance at all.
Reply:i don%26#039;t know why he didn%26#039;t tell him...he probably didn%26#039;t think it was important or thought it would worry harry.

j.k. stated in the online bloomsbury chat that people knew that they had been friendly and that friendship had ended.

she also says that james suspected sanpe harbored deeper feeling for lily and it was a factor in james hate for him.

i don%26#039;t think lupin knew that they were as good friends as they actually were because he coudn%26#039;t figure out a good reason snape would deserve dumbledore%26#039;s trust.

okay now i%26#039;m rambling.
